During the c17 and c18 Godstone became a busy village.  Staging place on the important highway between London and the South, with several Inns catering for the horse-drawn vehicles and travellers.  It became a manufacturer of rope, bricks, tiles and leather quarries for sand and gravel.  The village pond is called ‘Horse Pond’ and was where horses would be watered before being stabled overnight in the pub that is now the White Hart Barn, but was actually called the Clayton Arms in those days.

Horse-drawn vehicles would drive into the pond, this would allow the joints of the wooden wheels to swell and tighten up before the next leg of the journey.
