Godstone has a number of regular events taking place as part of the many organisations that are
active in the village.
Every August Bank Holiday, Godstone hosts the Village Fete – which according to some is the
longest continuous village fete in England. This is always very well attended, and last year it was
estimated that over 10,000 people attended. The fete consists of a large number of varied stalls,
food stalls and many local organisations. There is the popular Donkey Derby, a dog show and
other attractions.
In addition, the Godstone Village Association hosts an annual village Forum in March and an
annual AGM in October. It usually runs a Christmas entertainment event during December.

Teddy is lost at the moment. Do you know who he belongs to? He was found in (yes, in!) the pond on The Green in Godstone recently. If you know how his owner is, please do get in touch. The Lion’s club of Caterham, Oxted and Godstone was originally founded in 1978. We currently have a membership of 29 men and women of all ages. 
Our yearly programme consists of a variety of fundraising events such as quiz nights, swimathon and the Godstone Fete on Bank Holiday Monday where we provide hot food and drinks.

At Christmas our float travels around the local streets in December and raises a considerable amount of money which is given to local worthwhile causes.

We also have a varied social programme during the year which includes tenpin bowling, dinner meeting with a speaker, theatre visits and meals out together.

Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in the White Hart Barn in Godstone at 8pm.

We are looking for people who would like to join us to participate in our events.

A popular local camera club has released details of a picture-perfect programme for the new season. Planned events for the 2017-18 season include talks from high-profile guest speakers and regular club competitions to help members improve their photography skills.

Tandridge Photographic Society (TPS), which meets each week in Godstone, is also looking to welcome new members to the club at the start of the season on Thursday 7^th September. Sarah Bedwell, Honorary Secretary at TPS, said “Joining when we kick off the new season is a great idea as we put on a special Open Evening to welcome new members and discover what sort of photos they like to take.”

To help local photographers develop their skills, the club has planned a series of evening events for the coming season. Guest speakers will include Paul Sanders, former picture editor of The Times, and coastal adventurer and photographer Ken Scott. The club also organises friendly competitions where members’ photos are assessed by external judges who offer advice and suggestions for improvement.

Club Chairman, John Howard, commented “With today’s smartphones and digital cameras it’s never been easier to take good photos, but it takes practice and experience to take great pictures! That’s why we love welcoming new members to the club. It’s a joy to see how quickly their photography can improve.”

The Sites Consultation which forms part of the Tandridge District Council Local Plan closes in just 15 days time. The document, (which can be downloaded here), lists every site that Tandridge District Council have kept in for consideration, including those that it has subsequently ruled out, (but reserves the right to re-visit if it deems it necessary).

Part of that document, and crucial to the Parish of Godstone, is Section 8, the proposal to develop a ‘new extended settlement’ of at least 2,000 homes in Blindley Heath and/or South Godstone. This level of development will change the face of the parish forever and is most unwelcome by the majority of residents.

It is widely acknowledged that some development is needed to support the community. Some ‘starter housing’ is needed to help younger people get onto the property ladder, some retirement housing is needed for the elder members of our community, maybe even some family housing, (although this is less pressing because the older members of our community will downsize out of family housing into retirement housing). However, Godstone’s needs for housing are not served by a ‘new extended settlement’.

The situation is now urgent. Please, if you have any view at all on whether either South Godstone or Blindley Heath should be the recipient of a ‘new extended settlement’ of at least 2,000 houses, submit a comment to Tandridge District Council. More can be found on the Tandridge Local Plan and the way to submit comment here.

Godstone Baptist Church are looking for volunteers to help on a Friday between 10am and 1.30pm, for some or all of this time, as they provide lunch and dessert for the elderly in the area. Help is needed in and around the kitchen with the established team who cook and serve meals to the 40 or so who attend each week.
